With all-american accolades, brand new coaching staff, and 50% underclassmen, the 2018 Providence Academy varsity volleyball team is like none other. The young team boasts several honors among its players. Captain Kate Neill (‘20) was recognized 2018 AAU Volleyball Academic All American. Co-captain Mimi Meadows (‘20) was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Phenom List. Alongside co-captain Makenna Detert (‘19), these players have helped the team achieve their current standings of 4-1 in conference, 4-6 overall and 3rd in the Heritage Tournament.
This year’s new coaching staff is excited to help the Lady Lions achieve their goals; under the leadership of Coach Stephanie Remley, assisted by Jenna Meyer and Steff Larson, the team is working hard to become conference champions. “I am excited to provide players with all of the tools they need to be successful, to show the student athletes I care about them as more than just people who wear a jersey,” said Remley. Remley has been working especially hard to boost players’ confidence, to move away from overthinking each play, which can be difficult in such a fast-paced but mental game.
Those internal challenges haven’t interfered with the team’s bond, nor has the age gap between Seniors and Freshman. The girls kicked off the season by playing Whirlyball in Maple Grove followed by a delicious lunch to spark the strong relationships that they now have. Players believe more friendships off the court will lead to more success on the court.
So far, their philosophy is paying off; the varsity girls have enjoyed early success and improvement in their skill sets. Come watch these amazing athletes play the Breck Mustangs on October 3rd at Providence Academy starting at 7pm in the main gym. Go Lions!
